February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month

Each year 6 – 8 million cats and dogs enter the U.S. shelter system– fewer than half are lucky enough to find forever homes.

What can you do?

To help turn the tide on the staggering statistics, every year National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month and World Spay Day shine the spotlight on the need to spay and neuter our pets.

Not only does altering our four-legged friends play a significant role in ‘fixing’ the problem of pet overpopulation it also helps homeless companion animals who might face their fate in an animal shelter due to overcrowding, spaying and neutering.

Benefits of Spay/Neuter for Your Cat

Sterilization can help to curb potentially perilous behavior, such as the urge to roam, which makes a pet more vulnerable to diseases and more likely to be injured or killed by various outdoor dangers, including passing cars.

Sterilized pets often exhibit fewer behavioral problems. For example, neutered males are less likely to mark their territory or show aggression. Spayed females won’t go into heat, which means they won’t attract males and exhibit the often disruptive behaviors associated with the heat cycle.

Spaying and neutering also adds to the longevity of our purring pals and barking buddies, with dogs living an average of 1 to 3 years longer and cats 3 to 5 years more by reducing the risk of certain cancers, the American Veterinary Medical Association reports. For instance, spaying can prevent uterine infections and breast tumors in female pets, while neutering can prevent testicular cancer and certain prostate issues in males.

Today is a great time to schedule your cat to be spayed/neutered!

Some people may shy away from the thought of adopting 2 cats or kittens at once, but those who have know why 2 really is better than 1 when it comes to cats!

There is nothing more relaxing or satisfying to a cat-lover than watching your feline companions snuggled up with each other or engaging in a mutual grooming session. If we are lucky, and we often are, our lap or right by our side is their favorite spot for these activities.

A bonded pair will not bond to their humans any less than a single cat. In fact, a pair may even bond to their human more. Cats can provide each other with play and companionship when you aren’t around, but they lack the ability to give scratches and pets in all the places cats love.

There are many more reasons to love a pair. Come in to CatNap and let our cats show you!

Moses, another transfer from Chicago Animal Care and Control, had a badly injured foot up on arrival.  When we saw his paperwork, we were shocked that this sweet and gentle boy had over 20 fractures to his rear foot.  He let us gently change the dressing on his bandages and even gave soft kisses to our hands.  After 2 weeks of healing and recovery, it was determined, unfortunately, that his foot was not healing properly and an amputation was in order.  If you’d like to support Moses or any of the other special needs cats in Tripp’s Troops, please donate here.
